HARRY BELAFONTE – 91

Harry Belafonte has been one of the most enduring and endearing personalities in music. He is known as the King of Calypso and is considered one of the most successful Jamaican American pop stars. He started his career during the 1950s. He got his big break in 1956, releasing his album Calypso, which became iconic and influential and is given credit to popularize the Trinidadian Caribbean musical style to the global audience. Concurrent to his music career, Belafonte has starred in numerous films over the years. Among the most notable are Bright Road, Kansas City, and Bobby.

Outside of entertainment, Belafonte has been politically active since before he even started his career. During the movement for Civil Rights, Belafonte was an early supporter and became a close associate to Martin Luther King Jr. In addition; he has been a vigorous opponent of South Africa’s apartheid policies. He has participated in anti-war movements, particularly during President George W. Bush’s administration.
