Most people romanticize the concept of “love at first sight,” but Tom Ford experienced it firsthand. He recalls being scared by his future husband when the two first met at a fashion event in 1986 and how he agreed to marry him in an elevator ride.

Ford had gone to Women’s Wear Daily, the magazine for which Richard was working, and the two met there ten days after the New York fashion show. They were riding in the same elevator, and it didn’t take long for their connection to become apparent. Ford claims that he decided he wanted to spend the rest of his life with him at the end of the ride. The chemistry between them increased, and it wasn’t long before Buckley handed the designer the key to his apartment in a Tiffany box.
